- XXXVIII Congreso M.C.E.P. - Lleida 2010

We will introduce ourselves, the MCEP ( Movimiento Cooperativo de Escuela Popular) as a group of people directly linked to teaching field hoping to renovate and transform the school throughout cooperation and research. We see our work as a means to create a new society. This ideal school is the so called "ESCUELA POPULAR".

The MCEP is a pedagogic and social movement which includes both activities regarding teachers training and friendship ties among its members. This is not a mere pedagogical group, devoted to research, experimentation of new curricula, designing of new teaching tools or resources and so on, nor a club whose only aim is friendship, but an organization with further goals:

  • because we conceive school and school work as an essential part of the community
  • because our members undertake responsibilities not only at school but also outside school as well.
  • because we think our work at school is part of the effort to achieve a better society, fairer and more balanced.

We realise that to be a movement implies the possibility of change and internal renovation; that it means to deal with very diverse motivations, different political and social views and different pedagogical approaches. And that the diversity in our practice requires an open attitude and respect to these differences even if sharing a common pedagogical base.

The MCEP is therefore a social and pedagogic organization with:

  • an aim: the "escuela popular"
  • a proper and defined pedagogy: la "Pedagogía de Escuela Moderna" or "Pedagogía de Escuela Popular", drawn from the French pedagogue and teacher Celestin Freinet’s principles.
  • members in almost the whole country.

The MCEP is organised as a confederation of regional branches, twenty one all together. A "Secretaría Confederal" -a committee- coordinates their work. Besides, each branch has an autonomous organization and an autonomous work.

Every year there is a Convention where attendants can meet colleagues from other groups, share work experiences and join in debates on social issues and pedagogical ideas.

The MCEP is part of the F.I.M.E.M., an organization of similar associations based in some thirty countries.
